5 Fun Things to do Outside of the Orlando Theme Parks

From beautiful beaches to retail therapy and much more!

A holiday to Orlando will most likely include a visit to the amazing theme parks, but what else is there to do? Let us inspire you…

Orlando is famous for its world class theme parks but exploring them all can be exhausting work! It’s a good idea to factor in a ‘rest day’ during your trip so that you can relax and get your energy back so you’re ready for more theme park fun. When you fancy a bit of a break, there’s plenty to keep you busy outside of the parks. Here’s just 5 fun things you can do…

1. Spend the day at the beach

Clearwater Beach Florida

There’s nothing more relaxing than spending a day in the sunshine, relaxing on the beach. Clearwater beach is one of our favourites. It’s less than 2 hours away from the Walt Disney World Resort, so if you’ve chosen to rent a car it will be easy to get there. Don’t worry if you haven’t though, you can still enjoy a day trip to this beautiful beach, where transport is arranged for you.

Spend some time soaking up the sun, taking a dip in the sea or even embarking on a short cruise where you’ll be able to see plenty of dolphins! There are lots of restaurants nearby, so you definitely won’t go hungry.

2. Visit I-Drive 360

Madame Tussauds Orlando

I-Drive 360 is located right in the heart of central Florida. The 18-acre dining and entertainment complex is a great place to visit outside of the theme parks, as there’s something for everyone. Families will love admiring the stunning sea creatures at SEA LIFE Orlando, and everyone can enjoy posing next to their favourite celebrity at Madame Tussauds. The impressive Coca-Cola Orlando Eye takes you 400-feet into the air, where you’ll get the best view of Orlando.

The Orlando Eye

For adults, there are lots of nice restaurants and bars to choose from, which make for a great night out. We love the Tin Roof, as it has a tasty menu and fantastic live music. There’s also a Mexican restaurant, steakhouse and Mediterranean grill.

3. Go shopping

Florida isn’t just famous for its incredible theme parks, but also, it’s huge range of shops. If you fancy a serious shopping spree, you’ve come to the right place! The Florida Mall is just a short drive from the theme parks and with over 250 retail, dining and entertainment options, there’s plenty to keep you busy. You’ll find shops like Zara, Michael Kors, American Girl, Apple, the Disney Store and Macy’s to name just a few.

Orlando shopping outlets

If you want to treat yourself to something special, the premium outlets are a great place to go. These are home to hundreds of designer stores with huge discounts of up to 65%! At Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets you’ll find stores like Armani, Burberry, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein, Coach, Diesel, Ralph Lauren and many more. If you don’t want to venture too far, Disney Springs is the ideal option for a spot of retail therapy.

4. Explore the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center is an amazing place to visit and offers something completely different to the theme parks. This is an absolute must for any kids (or big kids!) who love all things to do with space. You’ll be able to get up close to iconic rockets that have flown into space, meet real astronauts and if you’re lucky, you might even get the chance to witness a rocket launch!

There are lots of exhibits to explore inside, as well as an IMAX cinema, astronaut training simulators and a breath-taking shuttle launch experience, which makes you feel like you’re hurtling into space.

5. Watch the big game

Orlando City Soccer

Sport is huge in Orlando and if you want to get into the spirit, watching a live game is the best way. Orlando City Soccer games are great fun and guaranteed to be action-packed. You’ll see the stadium transformed into a sea of purple and feel the electric atmosphere reach fever pitch as the game begins.

Orlando Magic Basketball

Basketball is another popular sport and if you’re visiting Orlando during the season, it’s well worth making time to see a game. Head down to the Amway Center to cheer on the Orlando Magic team and experience the ‘magic’ for yourself. Look out for slam dunks, three pointers and even a half-time cheerleading performance.
